Österbotten vol. 3

Blogroll, Finland, Pampas, Picture a day

Where should I begin? In Vaasa probably, as it is such a vibrant and fresh little town – and I mean town, not a mere collection of houses and supermarkets (Seinäjoki, I’m looking at you). I did not have much time to walk around the town, instead, one free afternoon I made a short trip to Söderfjärden crater, at first glance quite a boring circular plain scattered with small fields. But if you are lucky enough and catch this beautiful winter golden hour light, it is pure magic.

And some evening impressions from Vaasa harbour:

From Vaasa I continued northwards, made a quasi-legal stop at the fox/mink farm and shed a tear. I won’t post the picture where you actually can see the distressed fox’s face 😦

And after a really interesting interview I got some fresh air (literally, sorry foxes but every time I drive between towns in Österbotten the smell hits me) in Nykarleby. Imagine these in summer.

Actually I don’t recall when I was passing Pedersöre – and why did I take that road. I found an abandoned meat (?) factory, or meat product factory to be more precise. It was superslippery outside, the dawn had began to set and I did not dare to climb inside. I needed (my) company.

And here we go, Jeppis aka Jakobstad aka Pietersaari (Iknowright). Well. There were some pretty houses, but this was my first impression:

Haha, this is truly a rubbish post, just a collection of photographs, no impressions, feelings, stories. I don’t have that many stories in fact, but the people are extremely friendly in the north. Does this actually apply to all countries, that the northerners are very laid-back and friendly? Northern parts of towns are pleasant to live in? Who knows. After all Österbotten is not that far up north if you look at the map of Finland, but if you look at the population density, it actually could be.

I cannot wait to visit next time, hopefully when the days are longer and the air smells of spring and hope!

On the go.

I’m typing this on the phone and it is definitely not that easy. Shall I give in and get a tablet with a keyboard or something.? Plus I have no access to my camera pic as of now, so yeah, this might be a bit dull.

First, a bit of boasting: my no-more-sweatshop challenge is going well! I have been so tempted a few times but I’m still good and fair;)

Second, TelltsleFacebook reminded me that today is my 11 year anniversary of FB presence. What?! 11 years?! With a tear jnder my eye I remember tjose times ehen FB was fun, apolitical, for university students only, I had no need to censor my posts, it was just a play. And today, FB is the vox populi and your profile is your constructed self as you want the society to see you… and everyone is on it. Everyone. Not a fun place anymore, actually I do feel anxious every time I open it, anticipating more ignorance, boasting and suggested posts… no.

I’m in Pampas, aka Österbotten, for the moment. Doing my fieldwork and exploring new places. Burglars: don’t worry, my man is at home, taking care of our property. So! To begin with, there are plenty oc mink/fox/fur farms around. It’s not a pretty sight really, in fact it’s pretty terrible, and as a consequence driving along the coastal roads smells 😀 Yesterday I made it to the Söderfjärden crater. No bull, a real crater. It was too cool to describe in words:

Today I waved byebye to Vaasa and discovered Nykaabi, aka Nykarleby. Def worth a visit. For the nature, people and the overall positive vibes!

Needless to say after having driven 200km per day at least I’m knackered. And glad that the Valentines is called “the friends’ day” in here. Somehow it makes d everyone feel loved, nevermind the relationship status…

That’s a brain/marshmallow/cloud/cotton candy heart for all of you out there. Take what you need out of it ❤ and now please excuse me, I need to go to bed. Noapte buna!

Six pieces of fruit&veg and a picture or a post a day.

In order to become more consequent in my work and other deeds I worked out that sharing my with the virtual crowd AND the handful of my faithful readers might actually help me crack the habit and prevent those rather unpleasant moments of not-accomplishing-anything in my life. So here we go. Sometimes – especially on those grey, hazy days when nothing seems to have happened – I admit I might cheat and use a picture from the day before or something, but at least we are still talking about a new photo every day.

Now, what have I been doing – oh yeah, I went to Österbotten. And – as per usual – I was stunned by the beautiful nature, kind people, fragrant forest and simply another life pace. Or different conception of life…

I spent some time in Kokkola, and visited Neristan – the old town. It was not unlike Rauma or Porvoo: a collection of colourful wooden houses, window displays, thick window glass, thrift stores and minigalleries, and as the destiny wanted it not tourists at all.

Around the Österbotten countryside I found some lovely abandoned shops/banks/social gathering places (and smelly mink farms!). The nostalgia hit me, I can imagine life in those villages to have been much different while these institutions were still active.

Oh and the pictures of the d.. week. Countryside and colours.
